From November 3rd to 5th, the 3rd Damage and Fracture Mechanics and Engineering Applications Symposium was successfully held in Hefei, Anhui, sponsored by the Chinese Society of Mechanics, Anhui Society of Mechanics, School of Engineering Sciences of the University of Science and Technology of China, and the National Key Laboratory of Nonlinear Mechanics in Extraordinary Environments. Professor Feng Xiqiao of Tsinghua University and Professor Zhang Zhong and Professor Wu Hengan of the University of Science and Technology of China served as co-chairs of the conference. More than 850 experts, scholars and graduate student representatives from well-known domestic universities, research institutions and industry enterprises such as Tsinghua University, Peking University and the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the conference to exchange academic views on the latest progress and achievements made in my country in recent years in damage and fracture mechanics and its engineering applications. This conference has 22 special topics, a total of 268 invited reports, 66 oral reports and 107 poster presentations.

The opening ceremony of the conference was hosted by Professor Wu Hengan, co-chair of the conference, chairman of the Anhui Society of Mechanics and executive dean of the School of Engineering Sciences of the University of Science and Technology of China. Academician Zhou Youhe, Chairman of the Solid Mechanics Committee of the Chinese Society of Mechanics, Professor Zhang Zhong, Co-Chairman of the Conference, and Researcher Wei Yujie, Director of the National Key Laboratory of Nonlinear Mechanics in Extraordinary Environments, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. They warmly welcomed the active participation of fellow mechanics colleagues in the conference, looked forward to the development prospects of damage and fracture mechanics, and expressed their gratitude to the conference organizing committee and student volunteers who worked hard to organize the conference.

After the opening ceremony, Academician Zhou Youhe of Lanzhou University and Academician Lu Jian of City University of Hong Kong respectively gave two special reports on Overview of Research Progress on Fracture Mechanical Behavior of Superconducting Materials and Structures and Its Influence on Superconducting Physics and New Progress in Additive Manufacturing and Strain Delocalization: Principles, Design, Preparation and Application of Advanced Materials.

The special report meeting was held simultaneously in 15 academic lecture halls, focusing on 22 topics such as Deformation damage and fatigue fracture of new metal structural materials, Advanced light source in-situ characterization technology of damage evolution, Strengthening and toughening mechanism and microstructure regulation of advanced materials, Fatigue damage and fracture of composite materials, Damage and fracture in engineering structures, and Strong dynamic load damage and fracture. Experts at the meeting shared the latest progress in this field, and the discussion atmosphere was warm and intense.

Based on the 107 posters submitted by the participating students, the conference selected 6 winners of the Special Prize for Excellent Reports, 24 winners of the Excellent Reports Award and 30 winners of the Excellent Reports Nomination Award through voting by 45 judges and all participating students.

The scale of organization, academic depth and breadth of content of this conference were highly praised and unanimously recognized by the participating experts, which further promoted the cooperation and exchanges between domestic and foreign scholars, expanded the theoretical research and technical application in the field of damage and fracture mechanics, and promoted the development of the discipline of mechanics. The conference volunteers mainly come from graduate students and undergraduates of the Computational Mechanics Laboratory of the University of Science and Technology of China. The students' enthusiasm, hard work and rigorous and meticulous work attitude ensured the smooth completion of various tasks of the conference.
